Hot Wheels Roller Derby

I’ve been interested in attending a roller derby bout for a while now.  I was invited along to the Hot Wheels -v- Manchester match at the North Bridge Leisure Centre in Halifax.  Luckily my good friend Helen from the Hot Wheels squad was happy to look after me and explain the rules to me (of which there are many) as I hadn’t a clue what was happening at first!

I really enjoyed the event, despite struggling to follow what was happening half the time – the girls were certainly having a great time and there was a good atmosphere from the noisy crowd.  There were loads of bumps and crashes but this is all part of the bout.  The Hot Wheels girls won convincingly with a score of  189 – 95.  It’s one of the most interesting events I have photographed for a long time.  I am in the middle of making some arrangements to do some WOW shots with the team (sportraits stylee) so I am looking forward to that.

If you get the opportunity come along to one of the bouts, it’s fabulous fun for all the family.

Brighouse Link

For quite some time I have been hoping for a good networking group in Brighouse (where I live) as I’m keen to build a local reputation.  This was the second Brighouse meeting to be held at Prego’s.  Debbie at Sleigh and Story Accountants (the organisers) asked if I would put my skills to use to photograph some head shots. Here’s a few of the images I took for some of the delegates.

Wakefield Business Conference

As a consequence of Danny Matharu (the brains behind the Yorkshire Business Conferences) being so happy with my last PR photography, he invited me back to shoot the Wakefield Business Conference publicity shot!  This time the location was the wonderful swanky offices of Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors in Wakefield.  The temperature outside was very cold so I knew I would only have at most five minutes with the sponsors.  I arrived early to suss out the location and to set up some lighting, as soon as everyone arrived I knew exactly where people were to stand, my lighting had already been metered so it was just a case of shooting.

In the last post about public relations photography I mentioned that in my opinion a shot should either: tell a story, be fun or striking.  For this shot I used the telling a story but also striking.  I laid on the floor and shot with a wide angle lens.  I knew it wasn’t going to be the most flattering of looks but this was about drama and making my subjects look powerful.   I am pretty sure this image will help sell the story.

Calderdale Business Conference PR shot

Danny Matharu, the brains behind the Yorkshire Business Conferences, contacted me to shoot some P.R shots.  We were to meet at the Shay Stadium in Halifax and shoot outside the venue.  My personal opinion is P.R shots need to be either fun, striking or tell the story in one picture.  We met with some of the sponsors and I lined them up and shot them outside the stadium (telling the story).  Knowing that we’d already got the safe option in the bag, we went into the stands and had a bit more fun. We tried a few different things and then I noticed a cone.  I asked the sponsors to line up and Danny held the cone up like a loudspeaker.

More often than not when shooting P.R time is of the essence as it’s usually busy people who don’t like getting cold!  If I can do my job with minimum time and fuss and deliver great results it keeps all parties happy.

Confident Club annual conference

After photographing the awesome Steve McDermott (check out his brand new blog…here) I was invited to shoot the Confident Club’s annual conference “The ladder of success” at the Holiday Inn, Brighouse.  The brief was a little different to usual.  I was told to grab a few shots of each speaker and then to sit down and enjoy the event!  Steve McDermott was the first speaker and he made it look so easy.  He delivered lots of great information about setting goals, as an added bonus he also gave me a signed copy of his book which I am looking forward to reading.

Paul McGee (the S.U.M.O guy) was up next and he is someone that I really wanted to see speak as I read one of his books last year “Self Confidence” and it had a massive impact on my personal development.  It was great to see him ‘live’ and he continued to talk about using different steps on the ladder to achieve your vision.

Phil Hesketh was the final speaker who spoke about using the people around you and forming a cabal.  He helped illustrate this with amusing antidotes from a trip to Australia and lots of theory.

Also in my brief I needed to get a shot of the three speakers on their stools (a bit like a motivational West Life!).  Once again the timings were very tight but I managed to set up a couple of lights in a different room to get the shot.

I would love the opportunity to work with these international speakers again and it was an added bonus to be allowed to sit down and listen as well.
